We tend to think of joining the “Resistance” as being part of a Star-Wars-flavored rag tag team of rebels in a secret base plotting to destroy the evil empire’s mighty Death Star (or is it just me?).
When resistance can be as simple as playing dumb.
Fascism needs snitches everywhere in order to work. By vowing not to snitch, you can therefore strike a blow for justice, without doing anything at all.
It’s easy: when Ice shows up at your workplace asking whether you’ve got any immigrants working there – you don’t know. Have you seen any foreign-looking day laborers working around town? You sure haven’t. Has anyone speaking Spanish offered to babysit for you, tutor your kids, sell you food, do your yardwork or write for your op-ed page? Nope. Hey, have you left water for people wandering through the desert borderlands, or given money to immigrant mothers peddling candy on the train? No, officer, I’m sorry. It doesn’t ring a bell.
Don’t snitch.
Don’t obey in advance.
Stay true to your values.
Keep doing good.
Keep creating art.
Build Resilience Through Connection and Community.
I’ve rested up over the holidays and I’ve got a lot of ideas about how to not just survive the dark times ahead but how to build something better. I’ve got thoughts I want to share about how the anti-capitalist forces already present in our world can be strengthened and grown. How rejecting the status quo needs to go right down to our bones, deep inside our families and relationships. How writers (including myself) need to double down on making art (Art is Resistance; Writing is Resistance) and how even non-writers can use their imaginative powers to build a better world.
I’ve got lots coming in 2025: new stories, new episodes of the podcast, new ideas about how to fortify yourself for the days ahead. The schedule might be a little erratic—I’m committed to getting my novel written, so that’s going to the front of the queue—but this newsletter and podcast will continue to roll out through 2025.
Here’s a few things to get you started…
How to Get a Good Start on 2025:
Give yourself hopeful climate fiction from the Solarpunk Starter Pack:
Re-Read Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny:
Make time for coziness:
Find hope in the fact that tons of people everywhere are constantly doing good things in the world and you can be one of them. If for no other reason than no one can stop you.
I continue to believe: the future is what we make it.
Let’s make it together,
Sue
