This entire podcast/substack is about lifting up hopeful climate fiction stories: because we can’t do it unless we can imagine it first, because there are so few stories out there which grapple with the climate crisis in a way that’s focused on solutions and hope, and because sometimes, especially for those hip-deep in the fight, we just need some uplift.

So when election anxiety hit me like crazy, I knew right where to turn:

I’m intrigued by the idea of “starter packs”, and I get requests all the time about “where to start” with solarpunk or hopeful climate fiction. I point people to our growing list, but (yay!) it’s growing, and I understand the usefulness of having a place to start.

Since it just released, I’m especially pointing people towards Milkweed Editions’ Metamorphosis—not just because it has one of my stories, but because they’re taking the chance in publishing hopeful climate fiction (something not many publishers do) and I want this book to soar so they will publish more!

I’ve also put together a Solarpunk Starter Pack that includes Metamorphosis, as well as three other books: two (Metamorphosis, Solarpunk Creatures) are multi-author anthologies with some just top-notch stories, including ones from guests on the pod; the other two are single-author collections: mine (Halfway to Better) and Renan Bernardo’s Different Kinds of Defiance. These showcase a range of styles by a single author—I know some of Renan’s are connected, but mine were explicitly written to explore what I could do within the genre, mapping out the space creatively, so to speak.

Taken together, I think this Solarpunk Starter Pack gives you a great sense of what hopeful climate fiction can look like in short-story format (I’ll do another giveaway in the future with novels!).
