Stories of Defiance
Renan Bernardo was my third guest on the pod (Ep. 6: Exploring Grief in Climate Fiction) and I have yet to read a Renan Bernardo story that I didn’t love. This collection also just got new cover art and it is gorgeous! And long-listed for the British Science Fiction Association Awards (BSFA2026 — vote if you’re a member!).

BUY BOOKS, FIGHT FASCISM
I’m a firm believer that we need to support the art we want to see in the world. No matter whether you like cozy mysteries or terrifying horror, all art fights fascism… witness how Trump cannot suffer the Kennedy Center to live (after unsuccessfully trying to claim the cultural approval it represents by smearing his name on it).
Art doesn’t come from nowhere — it comes from the creative labor of artists of all kinds, and as a writer I can tell you that creating while living through The Horrors is incredibly difficult.
Add in the constant theft and onslaught of AI (and the piracy that feeds the machine), the direct attack of the fascists on any kind of funding for the arts, and the kow-towing to fascism by many in the media (including Hollywood and mainstream presses “pulling back from DEI”), the terrible people of the world are doing everything they can to suppress art.
Because art scares the fuck out of them.
Supporting authors and artists is critical but they don’t operate in a vacuum — libraries, small presses, and independent bookstores, even small online magazines and zines, are all supporting a literary ecosystem that helps art survive. And even thrive in the chaos. Shocking but true: indie bookstores are on the upswing, paper books are making a comeback, people are publishing zines like mad, and people are reading and reading and reading.
It’s fantastic… and exactly what needs to happen.
So if you can afford to buy books, please do so (and do it through your local bookstores or Bookshop.org or Libro.fm for audiobooks!). If you can’t buy books, borrowing from the library does all kinds of great things too — supports the library, the artist, and the community! Reading, reviewing, sharing… attending bookclub, starting one of your own, sending encouraging notes to the creators you love, simply being part of the literary ecosystem has tremendous power.
Knowledge and imagination are where the revolution begins.
